Which Airport Should Delaware Travelers Use? PHL, ILG, BWI

Written by Admin | Nov 5, 2026, 3:58:22 PM

Delaware has one commercial airport, and it sits within driving distance of four of the busiest airports on the East Coast. If you live in Wilmington, Newark, Hockessin or Middletown, that gives you a choice on almost every trip, along with a fair chance of picking the wrong one. A fare out of Baltimore can look like a bargain until you add 80 miles each way and a week of parking. A Wilmington nonstop can save you an hour on the road, but only if it flies where you're going.

Delaware Limo runs airport transfers from northern Delaware to all five of these airports, plus Washington Dulles. The drive times and toll estimates below come from our own airport transportation figures, so you can compare each airport on what the trip costs door to door instead of on the ticket price alone.

The Short Answer

  • Florida, the Carolina coast or San Juan: check Wilmington Airport (ILG) first. Avelo flies nonstop to those markets, and ILG is about 14 minutes from downtown Wilmington.
  • Business trips, most domestic nonstops and American Airlines connections: Philadelphia (PHL). It's American's hub and roughly half an hour away outside rush hour.
  • A Southwest fare, or a BWI price that beats PHL by a wide margin: Baltimore (BWI), as long as you budget about an hour and a half of driving each way.
  • Long-haul international or a United itinerary: Newark (EWR) or JFK. Plan on two hours or more in the car.

Drive times and toll estimates are from Wilmington and reflect Delaware Limo's published airport figures, last verified November 2026. Traffic, construction and weather will change them on any given day.

Philadelphia International Airport (PHL)

PHL is the default airport for most of New Castle County. It's the region's largest airport and an American Airlines hub, with the widest spread of nonstops within a short drive.

The drive from Wilmington takes about 28 minutes in light traffic and around 45 when I-95 backs up. Plan around the larger number, especially for late-afternoon flights.

When you land, your chauffeur can wait curbside or meet you inside the terminal with a sign. Meet and greet at PHL carries a $20 fee and suits first-time visitors, travelers with heavy luggage and anyone stepping off a long international flight.

Wilmington Airport (ILG)

ILG, which many locals still call New Castle Airport, has grown quickly. Avelo Airlines began flying there in February 2023, and according to the Delaware River and Bay Authority, the airline welcomed its one-millionth ILG customer in May 2026. An expanded terminal with a second gate opened on January 22, 2026.

The trade-off is route choice. As of the airport's February 2026 update, Avelo served 11 nonstop destinations from ILG, mostly in Florida, along with Myrtle Beach, Wilmington, N.C., and San Juan. Several are seasonal, and Avelo dropped Nashville, Raleigh-Durham and Jacksonville in early 2026. Check the current list on FlyILG before you plan a trip around it.

ILG also has an option many Delaware travelers overlook. American Airlines and Landline run a motorcoach from ILG to a secure gate in PHL's Terminal F. You check bags and clear TSA in New Castle, then connect to your American flight without screening again. It's booked on AA.com like any other flight segment.

Baltimore/Washington International (BWI)

Many Delaware travelers who choose BWI do it for Southwest, which has a large operation there and sometimes undercuts fares out of Philadelphia.

The savings have to cover the drive. BWI is about 80 miles from Wilmington, roughly 1 hour 20 minutes in good conditions and 1 hour 45 with traffic, and our toll estimate for the route is about $40. For pickups at BWI, we recommend curbside. Meet and greet is available for the same $20 fee if you would prefer to be met inside.

Newark (EWR) and JFK

These two are the long-haul choices. Newark is a major United hub, and JFK draws travelers looking for international carriers that don't fly out of Philadelphia.

Newark runs about 1 hour 45 minutes from Wilmington (2 hours 20 with traffic) with roughly $30 in tolls. JFK is about 2 hours 15 minutes and 138 miles in good conditions, closer to 3 hours in traffic, with tolls near $40. We offer meet and greet at JFK but not at Newark, where pickups are curbside. Give yourself extra time on Friday afternoons and holiday weekends.

How to Compare the Full Cost of Each Airport

Add up everything, not only the fare

Before you book the cheaper ticket, total these for each airport:

  1. The fare difference per traveler, multiplied by the number of travelers.
  2. Parking for every day you'll be away. ILG posted a rate of $11.50 per day in January 2026, so check current rates at whichever airport you're considering.
  3. Tolls in both directions.
  4. Extra hours in the car, and what that time is worth to you.

When a pre-booked car makes sense

Groups change the math fastest. Our Executive SUV seats up to six passengers, and the Transit van seats 14, so the cost of one round-trip transfer is split across everyone in the party. Compare that against a week or more of airport parking plus tolls. The answer changes with the length of your trip, so it's worth running both numbers.

We also track your flight, so a delay moves your pickup time, and our team handles last-minute changes around the clock.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the closest commercial airport to Wilmington, DE?

Wilmington Airport (ILG) in New Castle is the closest, about 7.5 miles and 14 minutes from downtown Wilmington. Avelo Airlines operates scheduled flights there, and American Airlines connects ILG to PHL by motorcoach.

Is it cheaper to fly from PHL or BWI if I live in Delaware?

It depends on the fare gap. BWI adds roughly an hour of driving each way and about $40 in estimated tolls compared with PHL. If the BWI fare doesn't save more than those costs plus any parking difference, PHL is usually the better choice.

Does Wilmington Airport have international flights?

ILG has no nonstop international flights. San Juan, Puerto Rico, is a U.S. territory served by Avelo. For international trips, travelers can use the American Airlines Landline coach from ILG to connect at PHL.

How long does it take to get from Wilmington, DE to JFK?

About 2 hours 15 minutes in light traffic and around 3 hours in heavier traffic, covering roughly 138 to 150 miles depending on the route. Our toll estimate for the trip is about $40.

Will my driver know if my flight is delayed?

Yes. Delaware Limo tracks inbound flights and adjusts pickup times when a flight runs early, late or gets canceled. You also receive your chauffeur's contact details and location updates by text before the ride.

Conclusion

For most people in northern Delaware, the decision comes down to destination first and total trip cost second. ILG is the easy pick when Avelo flies where you're headed. PHL handles almost everything else, and BWI, Newark and JFK earn their spot when the fare or the route justifies the extra miles. Whichever airport you choose, Delaware Limo can get you there with a tracked flight and a chauffeur who knows the route. Book an airport transfer or call (302) 319-3329 for a quote.
